Clemson University's athletic identity is instantly recognizable — bold orange, proud purple, and that unmistakable paw print. But before the Tigers adopted the iconic logo we know today, the university's branding evolved through decades of tradition and Tiger pride.
From Tiger Illustrations to the Tiger Paw
In the early 20th century, Clemson's athletic teams were represented by illustrated tigers — often detailed, hand-drawn, and far from standardized, with designs varying by sport and department.
That changed in 1970, when Clemson's athletics department set out to create a more unified visual identity. Working with an advertising agency and inspired by a real tiger paw cast obtained from Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History, designer John Antonio created the now-famous Clemson Tiger Paw. The logo's signature angle nods to the traditional 1:00 p.m. football kickoff time, and it was officially unveiled to fans on July 21, 1970 — going on to become one of the most recognizable marks in college athletics.
Still, fans of the old-school Clemson look never let go of their roots — and neither did we.
