The University of Wisconsin–Madison's mascot, Bucky Badger, has a history that stretches back nearly a century. From live-animal beginnings to becoming one of the most recognized mascots in college sports, Bucky embodies the spirit of the Wisconsin Badgers. Here's the real story behind Bucky, and how Tailgate Tikes brings that Badger spirit to the youngest fans.
The Origins of Bucky Badger
Long before Bucky as we know him existed, the University of Wisconsin used live badgers as game-day mascots in the early 1900s. The animals proved difficult to handle safely around crowds and players, and were eventually retired to a local zoo.
In 1940, California-based illustrator Art Evans created the now-familiar badger design — upright, wearing a red-and-white striped sweater, with a determined expression — for a set of collegiate mascot decals sold at a Madison bookstore. That illustration, copyrighted on October 2, 1940, is considered Bucky's official "birthday."
The mascot didn't take costumed form right away. In the years between, UW briefly used a live raccoon nicknamed "Regdab" (badger spelled backward) as a stand-in mascot. It wasn't until 1949 that a UW art student built a papier-mâché badger head, worn by a cheerleader at that year's Homecoming game — bringing Bucky to life for the first time. A campus naming contest that same year settled on "Buckingham U. Badger," shortened to the name fans know today: Bucky.
Evolution of Bucky Badger
Since that 1949 debut, Bucky's look has evolved alongside changing design trends and costume materials. His signature red and white striped sweater and expressive, engaging demeanor have become a fixture at Wisconsin athletic events — from leading "Jump Around" at Camp Randall Stadium to hyping up crowds at Badger hockey games.
The Significance of Bucky Badger
Bucky is more than a mascot — he's become a symbol of Wisconsin pride, representing the university's spirit across generations of students, alumni, and fans. From game days to community events, Bucky remains one of the most recognizable figures connected to UW–Madison.
